How to Clean Curtains
Be sure to follow the manufacturer's or seller's warnings to keep your shades in their first-day condition and extend their life. If it says not to hand wash or machine wash, then pay attention.
It is recommended to wash curtains an average of 4 times a year. However, this number increases in homes with smoking or heating and stoves. The washing program of the washing machine must be set to the gentle washing function. The rotating speed of the washing machine should be low, and the spinning process should be completed in a short time.
Curtains should be washed with warm water. Higher temperatures can damage curtains. If the curtain is a very delicate tulle, it may be possible to place it in an old pillowcase for safer washing.
Whitening cleaning products will shorten the life of the tulle and reduce its quality. Hence, it is best to stay away from such products.
Adding a teaspoon or two of granulated sugar to the washing machine can whiten curtains.
For whitening, the curtains can be soaked overnight in water with detergent.
You can use off-the-shelf laundry detergent or special products for curtain cleaning.
Curtains should be hung on the cornice immediately so that they do not wrinkle after washing. Weight built up underneath due to moisture automatically corrects curtain creases. Ironing the curtains will turn yellow in time. Therefore, ironing should be avoided. Alternatively, you can soak yellowed tulle in a cup of ammonia for a few hours to whiten it.
